Anthropic Overtakes OpenAI in Business AI Adoption

2 min read
A new study finds Anthropic overtaking OpenAI in business AI adoption, powered by Claude's coding lead. Here is what the enterprise shift means.

The enterprise AI race has a new front-runner. According to a new study on business AI adoption, Anthropic has pulled ahead of OpenAI among companies buying AI tools, reversing a lead OpenAI had held since the launch of ChatGPT. It is the clearest sign yet that the corporate market is splitting from the consumer one.

How Business AI Adoption Flipped

For most of the past two years, OpenAI set the pace in both consumer and business AI. Its models powered the first wave of enterprise pilots, and its brand was effectively synonymous with generative AI. Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI researchers, positioned Claude as the safer and more controllable option for regulated industries and large engineering teams.

That patience appears to be paying off. Recent adoption data cited by VentureBeat shows Anthropic climbing to roughly 34 percent of U.S. business adoption while OpenAI slipped to about 32 percent. Anthropic is also reported to be capturing the majority of new enterprise AI spending, a sharp reversal from what was a near even split earlier in the year.

Coding Is the Wedge

A big driver is software development. Anthropic now takes an outsized share of enterprise coding spend, and Claude Code, its agentic coding tool, has become the fastest growing product in the company’s history. Developer teams tend to standardize on a single assistant, so winning the coding workflow locks in recurring, high value contracts.

The picture is not one sided. OpenAI still leads on total revenue, with an estimated $13 billion in annual recurring revenue against roughly $5 billion for Anthropic, powered by its far larger consumer subscriber base. Winning enterprise share and winning overall revenue are, for now, two different contests.

Why It Matters

Enterprise contracts are stickier and more profitable than consumer subscriptions, so leadership here shapes which lab can fund the next generation of frontier models. Anthropic’s advantage is real but fragile: pricing pressure, OpenAI’s deeper war chest, and fast improving open weight rivals could all erode it. The question for the rest of 2026 is whether Claude’s enterprise lead becomes durable or proves to be a temporary swing.
