Sony and TSMC Bet $6.3B on the Eyes of Physical AI
2 min readWhile the AI industry argues over who builds the brain, Sony and TSMC have quietly agreed to build the eyes. The two companies signed a definitive agreement this month to create Advanced Vision Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation, a roughly $6.3 billion joint venture in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan.
Two companies that already work together
Sony is the dominant maker of CMOS image sensors, the chips behind most smartphone cameras including Apple’s. TSMC is the world’s leading contract chipmaker and already runs fabs in Kumamoto. Sony has historically manufactured its own sensors, but the logic layers stacked underneath them increasingly need leading-edge process technology that TSMC is better placed to supply.
Rather than each building separately, they are pooling the effort into one company. Sony contributes about 465 billion yen in cash and assets, including a newly built fab in Koshi City. TSMC contributes roughly 282 billion yen in cash. Sony takes control of the venture, and Japanese government support is expected.
The physical AI angle
Smartphones are the near-term market, with volume production targeted for 2029. The longer-term ambition, per Sony Semiconductor Solutions, is sensors good enough for precise AI object recognition in robots and vehicles.
That is the physical AI thesis. Language models learned from text, but a robot arm or an autonomous vehicle has to perceive the world in real time, in bad light, at low power. Better sensors are the input constraint on that entire category, and today the software is running ahead of the hardware that feeds it.
Why it matters
This is Asia consolidating its grip on a layer of the AI stack that gets far less attention than accelerators. Nvidia has no meaningful position in image sensors. If perception hardware becomes the bottleneck for robotics, a Japanese and Taiwanese joint venture will sit at the chokepoint, in the same way TSMC and the Korean memory makers already do for training compute.
It is also a long bet. A 2029 production target means these sensors arrive for a robotics market that does not exist at scale yet. Watch whether other sensor makers respond with their own tie-ups, and whether Japan’s government funding follows the same pattern it used for TSMC’s earlier Kumamoto fabs.
