Google Tests Flipkart Purchases Inside Gemini in India

3 min read
Google is testing a Flipkart Buy button inside Gemini and AI Mode in India, just ahead of the festive rush. Here is what it means for AI shopping.

Google has started letting people in India buy Flipkart products without ever leaving Gemini. A Buy button now appears on selected product listings inside Gemini and Google’s AI Mode, and tapping it drops the shopper straight into a Flipkart checkout. The test is small for now, but the timing is deliberate: India’s festive shopping season is the single biggest stretch of the country’s e-commerce year.

From recommendations to transactions

AI Mode is Google’s conversational search surface and Gemini is its assistant app. Until recently both stopped at advice. You asked what to buy, got a comparison, then clicked out to a retailer to finish the job. Agentic commerce is the attempt to close that last gap so the assistant handles the purchase itself.

Google has been building toward an open version of this with its Universal Commerce Protocol, a proposed standard meant to give many retailers one shared, Google-hosted checkout.

What Gemini Flipkart shopping actually does

Per TechCrunch, the India pilot skips that protocol entirely. Rather than a Google-hosted flow, the Buy button hands off to Flipkart’s own branded checkout. The categories in the test lean toward smartphones, electronics, and mobile accessories, and access is limited to selected users and listings. A wider rollout is planned for October.

Flipkart is not a neutral choice. Google invested roughly $350 million in the Walmart-owned retailer in 2024 for a minority stake. Rivals such as Amazon still appear in results, but without the one-tap purchase path, which hands Google’s own portfolio company a visible advantage on Google surfaces. A Google spokesperson said the company is “always testing new features and experiences to help people discover and connect with businesses more easily.”

Why India goes first

India has more than a billion internet subscribers and is the world’s second largest internet market, which makes it an unusually good place to find out whether shoppers will trust an assistant with their money. Launching into the festive season means the traffic carries real purchase intent rather than curiosity.

It also exposes the gap between what Google says about open commerce standards and what it ships when speed matters. Watch whether October’s expansion brings other retailers in, or whether the Flipkart shortcut quietly becomes the template.

Agentic shopping has been demoed for the better part of a year. India is where it gets handed to a few hundred million people with a card already on file.
