AMD Unveils Full MI400 Lineup, Teases 1,000x MI500
2 min readAMD used its Advancing AI 2026 keynote in San Francisco to lay out its most aggressive challenge yet to Nvidia’s grip on the AI data center. On July 22 and 23, CEO Lisa Su revealed the complete Instinct MI400 accelerator family, detailed the company’s Helios rack system, and teased a future MI500 chip that AMD claims will deliver up to 1,000 times the AI performance of its 2023-era MI300X.
Filling out the MI400 family
Until now AMD had shown only pieces of the MI400 generation. The keynote filled in the full lineup. At the top sits the Instinct MI455X, a flagship training and inference part that packs 320 billion transistors, 432GB of HBM4 memory, and up to 40 petaflops of FP4 compute. AMD says it delivers roughly ten times the frontier-model training performance of the MI300X. A companion part, the MI450, offers the same memory and bandwidth at a lower power envelope for large-scale deployments.
Helios and the road to 2027
The MI400 chips anchor Helios, AMD’s double-wide rack system due in the third quarter of 2026. A single Helios rack links 72 MI455X accelerators with 31TB of HBM4 and can reach roughly three AI exaflops, which AMD frames as a blueprint for what it calls yotta-scale compute. Looking further out, the company teased the MI500 series for 2027 and its headline claim of a 1,000x jump over the MI300X.
Customers are already signing up
Hardware claims matter less without buyers, and AMD came with names. The company said OpenAI and Meta have together committed to 12 gigawatts of AMD accelerator capacity, while Microsoft Azure and Oracle were named as early Helios customers. Those commitments signal that the largest AI operators want a credible second supplier alongside Nvidia.
Why it matters
Nvidia still dominates AI training, but demand is outrunning any single vendor’s supply. A fuller MI400 lineup, a shipping rack system, and multi-gigawatt customer commitments give AMD its strongest position in years. The open question is execution: Helios has to ship on time and MI500 has to live up to a very large number. If AMD delivers, the AI compute market starts to look a lot less like a monopoly.
