AMD Buys Fei-Fei Li’s World Labs for $8.2B in AI Push

AMD is acquiring Fei-Fei Li's World Labs in an $8.2 billion all-stock deal, bringing spatial intelligence research in-house to shape its AI chips. Learn more.

AMD is buying World Labs, the spatial intelligence startup founded by Stanford’s Fei-Fei Li, in an all-stock deal valued at about $8.2 billion. The AMD World Labs acquisition is the chipmaker’s second largest ever after Xilinx, and it puts the researcher often called the godmother of AI inside a semiconductor company as executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting directly to CEO Lisa Su.

Why a chip company wants a model lab

AMD sells the Instinct accelerators, EPYC CPUs and networking that compete with Nvidia for AI data center budgets. Nvidia’s edge has never been silicon alone: it comes from deep software and from understanding where models are heading before customers do. AMD has been buying that understanding piece by piece, including the ZT Systems rack business and a string of software teams. World Labs is the biggest step yet, and the first that brings frontier model research in-house.

World Labs, headquartered in San Francisco, builds spatial intelligence models that generate, reconstruct and simulate interactive 3D environments from text, images and video, along with tools for robot learning and simulation. That is the workload profile behind robotics, physical AI and simulation, where compute demands look different from chat-style language models.

What AMD announced

In its September 28 announcement, AMD said World Labs’ expertise will give it deeper insight into how workloads are evolving and help shape its future technology roadmaps. Su said building compute platforms for the next generation of AI requires a deep understanding of how models are evolving, and that the team’s insight would feed hardware, software and systems design while strengthening the open AI ecosystem. Li said joining AMD gives her team the resources and engineering depth to accelerate its research.

After closing, World Labs will continue as a dedicated frontier research organization for large language models and spatial intelligence. The deal is expected to close by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approval. Investor’s Business Daily framed the purchase as bolstering AMD’s AI expertise at a moment when the company is trying to prove it can be a full-stack alternative to Nvidia rather than a cheaper second source.

Why it matters

This is the clearest sign yet that the AI hardware race is becoming a race for model researchers. Nvidia has long employed its own research labs; Google designs TPUs beside DeepMind. AMD paying $8.2 billion in stock for roughly a year-old lab says it believes co-designing chips with the people building next-generation models is worth more than another generation of incremental silicon gains.

Watch for how AMD positions spatial and physical AI at its upcoming OCP keynote, whether World Labs’ models stay openly available, and whether Nvidia responds with research acquisitions of its own.

Lisa Su just bought a window into the future of AI workloads. The question is how fast AMD can build chips to match what it sees.
