Anthropic Data Centers: Macquarie and GIC Fund the Build

3 min read
Anthropic, Macquarie and GIC have formed Theseus Infrastructure to fund and build dedicated AI data centers across the US. Read the full breakdown.

Anthropic has found the money to build its own compute. On August 10, the AI lab announced Theseus Infrastructure, a joint venture with Macquarie Asset Management and GIC, Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund, created to develop dedicated AI data centers with an initial focus on the United States.

Why Anthropic Data Centers Need Outside Capital

Frontier AI labs no longer simply rent capacity from the big clouds. Training and serving large models at scale requires purpose built facilities: dense power delivery, liquid cooling, and networking laid out for one tenant’s workloads rather than general purpose hosting. Anthropic has already committed roughly $50 billion to custom data centers and secured a $35 billion loan guaranteed by Google.

Those numbers sit awkwardly on the balance sheet of a company that also has to buy chips and pay researchers. The standard answer in the infrastructure world is to let someone else own the concrete and the transformers, then sign a long lease against it.

What Theseus Infrastructure Actually Does

Under the structure described by Macquarie, funds managed by Macquarie Asset Management will own the platform alongside GIC and fund the majority of the equity for each project. Anthropic is the anchor tenant, not the owner. Every site is meant to be built specifically for Anthropic’s growing capacity needs.

The partners also went straight at the political flashpoint around AI data centers. Anthropic said it will reimburse increases in consumer electricity bills tied to the developments, a direct response to the local opposition that has slowed projects from Virginia to India. The venture says the buildout will create thousands of construction jobs and permanent operating roles in host communities.

Why It Matters

This is the financing template the AI industry has been converging on all year. Labs supply the demand and the credit story, pension scale investors supply the capital, and a separate platform company holds the assets. It keeps tens of billions of dollars of construction off the lab’s books while locking in capacity for years ahead.

It also plants sovereign money squarely inside the American AI buildout. GIC helping fund the sites that will run Claude is a reminder of how internationalized the compute supply chain has become. Watch next for specific site announcements and the power agreements behind them, because electricity, not silicon, is now the slowest step in the process.

Anthropic has the demand and now a vehicle purpose built to serve it. The open question is how quickly permits and grid connections follow.
