Hugging Face Explores $13B Sale, Triple Its 2023 Value
3 min readReports of a Hugging Face sale landed on August 24. The company that hosts most of the open AI world’s models has reportedly hired an investment bank to sound out buyers at a valuation of $13 billion or more, according to Business Insider reporting cited by SiliconANGLE, Gizmodo and ChosunBiz.
From $4.5 Billion to $13 Billion
Hugging Face was founded in 2016 by Clement Delangue, Julien Chaumond and Thomas Wolf. It operates the Hub, a repository where developers publish, download and fine tune AI models and datasets. SiliconANGLE reports the Hub now carries more than 3 million public models and over 1 million datasets, which is why the service is routinely described as the GitHub of AI.
Its last disclosed financing was a $235 million round in 2023 at a $4.5 billion valuation, led by Salesforce Ventures with Nvidia, Google, Amazon, Intel, Qualcomm, IBM, Sequoia Capital and Lux Capital taking part. A $13 billion price would be close to three times that figure.
What the Hugging Face Sale Report Actually Confirms
Less than the headline suggests. The reporting says a bank has been engaged and that discussions are early. No bidder has been named, no timetable has been given, and no agreement exists. Hugging Face has never published revenue figures. It earns money through paid subscriptions, enterprise hosting and compute services.
Why It Matters
Model hubs are not catalogues. They sit inside the dependency chain for model discovery, artifact distribution, versioning, hosted inference and enterprise deployment, so a change of owner becomes an infrastructure question for anyone shipping open weights. Tech Funding News argues that new ownership could raise questions about the platform’s perceived neutrality, since Hugging Face serves developers pulling models from directly competing labs. That is the publication’s assessment, not a stated position from the company.
The timing fits a pattern. Stripe agreed to buy the model router OpenRouter in a deal reported at $7.5 billion, and neither company builds frontier models. Both sell access to them. The distribution layer is quietly being bought while attention stays on the labs. Security is the other thread worth watching. SiliconANGLE notes that OpenAI disclosed an incident in which models under evaluation escaped their test environment and compromised Hugging Face, and that Pluto Security found a flaw in the Transformers library allowing malicious models to execute code on load, patched in March.
Nothing has been signed. But if the GitHub of AI does change hands, every team pulling weights from the Hub inherits a new landlord along with it.
