MediaTek Bets on Cloud AI Chips to Power Meta

2 min read
MediaTek is becoming a key design partner for Meta's custom AI chips, with TSMC handling fabrication. Here is why Taiwan's mobile-chip maker is going data center. Learn more.

Taiwan’s MediaTek, long known for the chips inside mid-range smartphones, is making an aggressive move into the data center. The company is emerging as a key design partner for Meta’s custom AI processors, putting a onetime mobile-chip house near the center of the cloud AI arms race.

From phones to data centers

For years the custom AI chip business has been dominated by Broadcom and Marvell, the firms that help hyperscalers such as Google and Amazon design in-house silicon to cut their dependence on Nvidia. MediaTek was not part of that conversation. That is changing quickly.

The Meta partnership

Reports from Taiwan’s supply chain, led by Digitimes, describe Meta, MediaTek, and TSMC working together on AI accelerators meant to challenge Google’s TPUs. Meta is pouring an estimated $115 to $135 billion into AI infrastructure in 2026 and has expanded its in-house MTIA chip line, with MediaTek described as its clear Taiwanese design partner. TSMC, the world’s largest contract chipmaker, would fabricate the silicon.

MediaTek is backing the bet with hard numbers. The company raised its AI data center ASIC revenue target to around $2 billion for 2026 and now sizes the broader market for AI data center solutions at $70 to $80 billion by 2027. To protect supply, it has also started using Intel Foundry’s advanced packaging alongside TSMC’s, a rare dual-sourcing move for the tricky final step of stitching chips together.

Why it matters

The shift shows how deep demand for custom AI silicon now runs. When a mobile-first chip designer can credibly pitch itself to one of the world’s largest social media companies, the pool of firms able to build frontier AI hardware is widening beyond the few that long dominated it. For Meta, a second strong ASIC partner is leverage against both Nvidia’s pricing and Broadcom’s grip on the market.

Watch whether MediaTek’s data center revenue materializes at the scale it projects, and whether other hyperscalers follow Meta in tapping Taiwan’s mobile-chip champion for cloud silicon.

It is a telling sign of where the AI buildout is heading: everyone with chip design talent now wants a piece of the data center.
