OpenAI Puts Visual Ads Into ChatGPT Image Generation
3 min readOpenAI is bringing advertising into one of ChatGPT’s most popular features. The company said on October 5 that it will begin testing a new visual ad format that appears while users generate images, starting later this month in the United States with an initial group of advertisers. With ChatGPT now reaching 1.2 billion people every week, the move signals that ChatGPT ads are becoming a core part of how OpenAI makes money from users who never pay for a subscription.
Background: ChatGPT Ads Were Already Coming
OpenAI was cautious about advertising for years, and its leaders often described ads as something to try only after other revenue streams. That stance softened as the user base and the compute bills both ballooned, and the company now describes this launch as an expansion of an existing ads program. The new format is the first to put a visual placement inside a creative workflow: the moment a user is waiting for an image to render.
That timing matters. Image generation is one of the stickiest consumer features in ChatGPT, and the few seconds of waiting are exactly the kind of attention that advertisers pay for on platforms like Instagram and YouTube.
What Happened
According to BleepingComputer, the ads can use images to show product inspiration, demonstrate how a product is used, or depict experiences tied to a service. OpenAI says every ad will be clearly labeled and will remain separate from the image the user is creating. The company also repeated its standing promise that ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers.
The bigger shift is in measurement. OpenAI is integrating with Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp so advertisers can feed in conversion data, and it has signed on attribution partners including AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, Triple Whale and Kochava. DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science will handle brand suitability, checking that ads do not land in emotionally vulnerable or otherwise unsuitable conversations. OpenAI says those partners will not get access to private user conversations.
Why It Matters
Advertising is the business model that built Google and Meta, and OpenAI now has the audience to compete for the same budgets. Conversion tracking and third-party brand safety are the plumbing that large advertisers require before shifting serious spend, so this announcement reads as OpenAI building a real ad platform rather than running a side experiment.
The open question is user trust. ChatGPT conversations are far more personal than a search query, and OpenAI’s own safeguards acknowledge that ads near sensitive chats could backfire. Watch for how the US test performs, whether the format expands to other regions, and whether rivals such as Google’s Gemini follow with their own visual placements.
For now the experiment is limited to US users and a handful of advertisers, but the direction is clear: ChatGPT is becoming an ad-supported platform at a scale few companies have ever reached.
