Perplexity Personal Computer: Always-On AI Agent for Mac

2 min read
Perplexity's new Personal Computer turns your Mac mini into a 24/7 AI agent that manages files, email, and apps autonomously. Here's what it does and who it's for.

Perplexity AI just turned the humble Mac mini into something that looks a lot like a personal AI employee. The company launched Personal Computer for Mac on April 16, 2026, making its agentic AI system available directly on consumer hardware for the first time.

From Search Tool to Computer Operator

Most people know Perplexity as a smarter search engine. But over the past year, the company has been quietly rebuilding itself as an AI orchestration platform. In February 2026, Perplexity released Perplexity Computer, a cloud-based system capable of running multi-step AI workflows for hours at a time. Personal Computer is the next step: it brings that same orchestration capability off the cloud and onto your own machine.

The shift matters because it changes the fundamental model of what a personal computer is. Instead of waiting for your instructions, Personal Computer runs continuously in the background, managing tasks across your apps and files autonomously.

What It Actually Does

Personal Computer integrates with the Perplexity Mac App and connects directly to your local folders, iMessage, Apple Mail, Calendar, and other native apps. When set up on a Mac mini, it can run 24 hours a day, seven days a week, operating like a digital assistant that never clocks out.

According to MacRumors, the system is built around probabilistic goal completion rather than step-by-step manual instruction. You give it an objective, and it figures out how to get there by navigating your apps and data on its own. Perplexity describes it as “a general-purpose digital worker that operates the same interfaces you do.”

Who Can Get It and What It Costs

Personal Computer is rolling out now to Perplexity Max subscribers, which costs $200 per month. The standard $20/month Pro plan does not include access. Enterprise Max users are expected to get access soon.

The $200 price tag puts this squarely in the professional and power-user tier. But for teams or individuals who spend hours each day managing files, email, and scheduling, the value proposition is real: a Mac mini running Perplexity Personal Computer around the clock could replace a significant chunk of repetitive digital work.

Why This Matters

The launch signals a meaningful shift in how AI companies think about the user relationship. The cloud-based assistant model asks you to come to the AI. Personal Computer flips that: the AI lives in your machine, works inside your data, and operates on your behalf whether you are at the keyboard or not.

Privacy will be the key question going forward. Giving any system persistent access to your iMessages, email, and local files is a significant trust decision. Perplexity says the orchestration is secure and runs locally, but the company has not yet published a detailed technical breakdown of how data is handled.

For now, Personal Computer is the clearest example yet of AI moving from tool to tenant.
